The Healthy Consumers Guide, Special Edition: A Pro Tip and a Mind Trick

A busy professional’s guide to figuring out what is REALLY going to keep you healthy, energized and moving through an on-the-go lifestyle.

Life is busy. We are busy. The city is busy. As a working professional, we don’t typically have a whole lot of time or energy to spare. So what do we do? We maximize our energy and stay efficient with it. Cue: let’s not waste it. But with hundreds of spots claiming to have the next best food, drink or workout to make life better, it’s hard to know who to trust.

I got you covered. Bonus; I’ll keep it short. Because, well, busy.

Mind Trick: I will start on January 1 Ok let’s be honest- no one really starts on January 1st, because December 31st was likely filled with champagne and then all the pizza because “I am starting that year long diet and workout plan... tomorrow.” Research shows that people gain more weight leading up to a diet and unfortunately, many of us kid ourselves during the holiday season saying I won’t worry about it during the holidays then I will REALLY kick things into gear. What happens? We get a bit excessive and forget that holiday stretch between Thanksgiving and New Years is like 7 of our 52 weeks of the year. Do the math. It’s kind of like saying you are going to start saving money for something but before you do, you go and spend all of it. Result.... Making that goal, a whole lot harder than necessary. And what happens when things feel overwhelmingly hard? We quit. Hence the packed gyms January 2nd and the empty ones February 1st.

Pro Tip: Barry’s Bootcamp I admit it, I assumed Barry’s was not for me... picturing it to be a trendy train I was not interested in riding. As a marathon runner, Division One athlete and power yoga instructor, I didn’t see what more I would get out of my fitness through their workouts. I was wrong. A year ago I was dragged by a friend and I haven’t looked back. Workouts include alternating between treadmill runs that push endurance and build speed with weight training that creatively keeps your heart rate up while working your muscles. The trainers keep you moving and it’s a dream for the busy working professional; efficient, effective and energizing. In 50-60 minutes you’ll get a whole lot of work done. Bonus- the shampoo is nicer than most things I own. Why am I sharing this now? Two reasons; 1) To motivate you NOT to wait until 2019 to break a sweat and 2) Because they just announced a very rare holiday sale. Through Saturday you can take advantage of discounted packages. Because efficiency with money and time is a winning move.
