Member Spotlight: Matt Carrick
We’re so excited to introduce Matt Carrick of Freedom Boat Club! Matt joins us after spending time with Cape Cod Young Professionals, but with a degree from Babson and living in Milton, he’s looking forward to being more involved with our community.
As the President of Freedom Boat Club of Greater Boston & Cape Cod, he’s wasted no time getting his feet wet with our dirty water - Matt is sponsoring May’s Networking Night at the Palm. The Palm has become our member’s favorite event location, and we can only book it when we have a sponsor who loves us as much as we love the glass patio.
Let’s meet Matt Carrick of Freedom Boat Club!
What are your current responsibilities and background?
President and owner of Freedom Boat Club of Greater Boston & Cape Cod and M&M Marine.
Did you grow up in Boston? If not, what led you here?
I grew up in Dennis on Cape Cod and then went on to Babson College. After about 10 years in the real world I took a leap of faith and opened my first FBC franchise at Bass River Marina in West Dennis in 2008.
Tell us more about your company - what led you to this focus?
We added a 2nd location in East Dennis in 2009 and had those two locations until we had the opportunity to acquire the Boston area franchise in 2013. That brought us from 2 to 8 locations. Since then we have steadily added locations up and down the MA coastline and now have 20 clubs from Beverly to Provincetown.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
Babson is all about the entrepreneurial spirit. Never be afraid to take a chance, you will regret most the chances you didn’t take in life.
Is there a specific niche you focus on?
Anything and all things boating! In addition to Freedom Boat Club, we now also own a separate boat dealership call M&M Marine in Plymouth MA. We sell new boats and also our used FBC boats.
Who is an ideal member of Freedom Boat Club? How can they connect with you?
Our ideal member is a anyone from a young professional to a retiree. Our typical member is a young family that wants to get out on the water but without all the headaches and hassles that come with ownership. Like myself, they are busy with work, life, kids sports, etc, and a membership to FBC just makes it easy to get out on the water and spend time with family and friends away from technology.
What are three things you like to do in your free time?
Golf, boating and spending time with my family. My wife and I and our 3 boys live in Milton.
In the BostonYPA Community:
When/how did you become involved with BostonYPA? How has the affiliation helped your career?
I was involved in the Cape Cod Young Professionals when I was first getting FBC going on the Cape and now that the business is established, I wanted to get acquainted with BostonYPA both to meet new people and I truly believe that our membership offering is perfect for a young professional.
What do you enjoy most about being a member?
The events.
For those young professionals looking to possibly join, why should they join?
There is no better way for a young professional to meet like minded individuals interested in meeting new people and advancing both their networks and careers.
What would you like BYPA professionals to know about Freedom Boat Club?
Freedom Boat Club has been around for over 30 years, over 15 in MA. We are now the largest FBC franchise in the world with 20 locations in MA and over 250 boats for our members to enjoy locally! The best part about FBC is reciprocity. Members have access to our fleet of boats around the world at no additional cost. It’s like having the keys to a boat in your pocket wherever you travel from Boston to Florida to Australia!
If you haven’t met him Matt yet, please stop by and say hello on May 23rd, connect with Matt on LinkedIn or check out his boats that he’ll let you borrow.
Welcome to BostonYPA Matt!
