Now, Let’s Meet Lauren!
Did you grow up in Boston? If not, what led you here?
I grew up in Western Massachusetts, in the town of Agawam. If anyone knows the amusement park Six Flags New England, that’s ten minutes from my home! I moved to Boston for my graduate program at Babson College, where I obtained my Master of Management in Entrepreneurial Leadership. After that, I found a role working at a marketing agency, Matter Communications, and I've been in Boston ever since.
Tell us more about your job or company - what led you to this focus?
I was led to Matter Communications because I knew I wanted a job in marketing after I graduated, and Matter is a marketing agency right in the city. Being at an agency allows me to work on a variety of clients across different industries and the work is fast paced, so I am never bored. In my current role, I work specifically in marketing and sales automation, helping strategize marketing campaigns for clients and implementing them using various platforms, like Hubspot email and Salesforce Pardot.
Do you have a secret weapon? A special skill?
I would say my special skills lie in being very detailed oriented and an effective planner. This helps me professionally as I am able to keep my notes very organized and stay on top of deadlines at work. I always try to keep my priorities in check and try to have an accurate gauge on the amount of time it takes for me to complete certain tasks. In my personal life, I am also known for being able to craft and execute on a detailed, thorough plan, which is why I often get asked to help plan trips for my family and friends!
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
One of the best pieces of advice I have ever received was from my dad when I got my first job after grad school. When I told him I was worried about how I was now going to balance working a 9-to-5 job but still having enough free time, he told me about “sway”. “Sway” is the concept that there’s no such thing as balancing work and home perfectly, there is just “sway” back and forth. Sometimes, you’ll spend more time working on your career to get ahead, but then once you feel satisfied with your current level, you’ll remember to return to spending more quality time with family and friends. That is until you feel the urge again to move onwards and upwards in your career. He also said that life is like a long stairway where each step builds on the next. There will be setbacks along the way, but the key is to remember to pick yourself up and learn from your experience. You can also learn from other people’s mistakes by talking to others and reading articles to benefit from their knowledge so you can make the best decisions for yourself. This is advice that I try to live by, especially being a young professional.
Why did you pursue a career in your industry? What do you like most about it?
I pursued marketing because I always enjoyed studying marketing in my college classes— my bachelor’s degree from Bryant University is in Marketing. I like how marketing allows me to bring my people skills and creativity together to come up with timely and impactful marketing strategies. I also like how the industry is always changing since it provides opportunities to keep adapting and shifting to the best marketing tactics. It pushes me to stay on top of my game!
What is your ultimate career goal?
My ultimate career goal would be to be a director or VP level of marketing, but a shorter-term goal is to become a manager. Even though I am early in my career, I get excited when thinking about managing others and helping them shine in their careers. I think managers also can learn from the people they are managing, and I would be excited to help mentor a new generation of professionals.
What are three things you like to do in your free time?
In my free time I like to play tennis (I’m part of a Tuesday night tennis league!), explore cute new boutiques in the city (especially on Newbury St.), and read at night with a warm candle going (I’m currently reading The One Thing by Keller Papasan but just finished a romance novel by Emily Henry).
In the BostonYPA Community:
When did you become involved with BostonYPA? How has this affiliation helped your career?
I joined BYPA as a member in the spring of 2023, and then I joined the Leadership Team this past July. Since being on the leadership team, I have loved getting to help with the events of BYPA and provide a marketing perspective so we can keep seeing the right level of success. I have also become closer with the Leaders who run BYPA and I’m constantly amazed by the hard work they put into the events and the great outcomes they have.
What do you enjoy most about being a member?
Being a member allows me to get to know other members who come to multiple events since I can start to see them on a regular basis and form those connections. I truly enjoy networking at its core and the rush of joy I feel when I get to connect with someone who I didn’t know before and make a new friend.
For those young professionals looking to possibly join, why should they join?
Young professionals who are on the fence about joining BYPA should come to an event themselves to see why BYPA has the best networking events for young professionals in Boston. The people who come to BYPA events are always very friendly and welcoming and make any newcomer feel right at ease— it barely feels like networking! Everyone is also very professional and supportive of one another in their careers. Lastly, the events themselves are always very well done, so it is easy to have a good time at a great venue with nice people.
What would you like BYPA professionals to know about you? Any news/announcements/events/milestones coming up?
I want other BYPA professionals to know that at events, you can find me at the BYPA table in the front, so don’t be afraid to introduce yourself and say “hi” when you see me. I love meeting new people and I would be especially interested in getting to know anyone who is also in marketing!
